Carbon Monoxide Monitoring and Ventilation at the Northbrook Sports Center

Recently the Today Show ran a story about carbon monoxide poisoning and ice rinks.  We want you to be aware of the steps the Northbrook Park District has in place to guard against CO2 risks.

  •  The Sports Center has 4 carbon monoxide detectors. There are two A rink (north & sound ends), one in B rink (sound end) and another located in the ice making machine room.
  •  The detectors are inspected and calibrated annually, the last date of inspection was January 11, 2011
  • The primary ice making machine used at the Sports Center is electric and there are no emissions.
  • The secondary machine is propane and is used as a back-up when both sheets of ice need to be resurfaced at the same time and also when training employees.
  • The ice edger/cutter used is battery-operated with no emissions.
  • The Sports Center does have a ventilation system in use at all times. If the detectors pick up higher levels, the ventilation system is activated to operate at maximum potential.

Any question concerning CO2 detection or the Sports Center's ventilation system can call Randy Truhlar or Eileen Loftus at the Sports Center.
